Wiki / Select text

Select text

Define, explain, translate, highlight and quote any phrase.

Select any word or phrase on a card, or in an AI reply, and a small menu appears next to it.

BETA

The selection menu is a beta feature and is off by default. It is switched on with Pop-up discussion in Card Coach → Experimental. That page is unlocked with a beta password while the feature is being tested.

Ask AI about the selection

DefineA short definition of the selected term.
ExplainA deeper explanation in the context of the card.
TranslateA translation into your language.
Ask AIA free-form chat about the selection.
Search Google, Google Images, YouTubeOpens the search in your web browser.

Define, Explain, Translate and Ask AI open a small floating chat next to the text. You can drag it and keep asking follow-up questions.

The popup chat is temporary. It is never added to the card's main conversation or to the answer cache. Closing it (Esc, ✕, or a click outside) or moving to the next card clears it. It is text only, even when image sending is on.

Text tools

  • Copy: copies the selection.
  • Highlight: marks the text in yellow. The highlight is still there the next time you review the card.
  • Remove highlight: appears when the selection is already highlighted.
  • Quote in chat: puts the selection into the chat box so you can ask about exactly that part.
  • Save to card: in an AI reply, saves only the selected part to a note field.

How highlights are stored

Highlights on the card are stored by Card Coach per note. Highlights inside an AI reply stay with that message in the chat history. Each highlight is found again from its text and a little of the surrounding text, so it survives small edits to the card.

When you save a reply that contains highlights into a note field, the highlights are written into the field with an inline style. They then show on AnkiDroid, AnkiMobile and AnkiWeb too.
