Troubleshooting and FAQ
Fixes for the common problems.
I don't see the Card Coach menu
- Restart Anki after installing.
- Check you have Anki 2.1.45 or newer (Help → About).
- In Tools → Add-ons, make sure Card Coach is enabled, not shown as disabled or with an error.
The chat box doesn't show on my card
- By default it shows only on the back of the card. Flip the card, or turn on Show on the question side in Chat panel.
- If you closed the side panel, the chat returns below the card.
- Some heavily customised card templates hide added content. Try a card from a default Basic note to compare.
The AI returns an error
| 401 / invalid key | The API key is wrong or was revoked. Paste it again in Connection, then click Check connection. |
| 402 / out of quota | Card Coach AI quota is used up or expired. Top up, or switch to a free OpenRouter model. |
| 404 / model not found | The model name doesn't exist on that provider. Pick one from Browse. |
| 429 / rate limit | Too many requests. Wait a minute. Free OpenRouter models have daily limits, so try another one. |
| Timeout / no connection | Check your internet connection, firewall or VPN. |
Signing in from Anki doesn't connect
- Finish the sign-in in the browser tab that opened, including email confirmation for new accounts.
- Keep Anki open while you sign in. Then go back to Anki; the Connection page updates by itself.
- If it still shows signed out, click Connect to Card Coach AI again.
The AI ignores the image on my card
Turn on Send card images, use a model that accepts images, and set Image support to Allow if the model shows as unknown. See Image cards.
Answers are cut off
Raise Maximum reply length in Model, or ask "continue".
I keep getting the same answer
That's the answer cache returning a saved reply to an identical question. Rephrase the question, or turn off Reuse answers in Advanced.
Space types into the answer box instead of flipping the card
Turn typing off with the ON/OFF switch in the Give Your Answer box. See Give Your Answer.
Does it work on AnkiDroid, AnkiMobile or AnkiWeb?
No, add-ons run only in Anki desktop. Explanations saved into note fields, and highlights saved with them, do show on every device after syncing.
Reporting a bug
- Turn on Debug log in Advanced and repeat what went wrong.
- Describe what you did, what you expected, and what happened, with your Anki version and operating system.
- Leave it as a comment under the YouTube demo or on the AnkiWeb page.
NOTE
Never post your API key, your meta.json or your password in a bug report.
